What did YOU do today?

Posted in Redwood Living at 4:16 pm by Lynette

I knit 5 pair of socks.

Watched the Democratic Presidental Debates

Went to husband’s work to pick up pay check, deposited pay check in bank.

Visited the feed store to buy a bale of straw

Fixed the hen house so they would lay in there instead of in the dirt (see above)

Visited Home Boy Depot to see what I could use to replace the greenhouse door.

Visited Ace for the same as above, found nothing and decided to use a piece of plastic I had anyway.

Baked 175 sugar cookies for daughter’s math classes Halloween parties.

Wished the oldest son happy 23rd birthday, dropped off Birthday cards and gifts at his house at 8 am.  No he was not up yet.

Worked on the new sock machine and realized the ribber does not fit….luckly the person I purchased it from will replace it.

Geez…no wonder my back hurts.

Eye Candy Fiber

A Day’s worth of work dying 13 skeins of yarn.  You can see  in it’s raw state from top to bottom 10 Lords a Leaping, Fall Harvest, 8 Maids a Milking.

Yes, every year I do at least a couple new colorways for the 12 Days of Christmas.  Last year was Pear Tree and Ladies Dancing.

Enjoy the weekend!

Your Container Smells Like What?

Does this look like my new studio?  It could be.  Shipping containers are the latest thing in building.  They are sturdy, water tight, movable and secure.  You can frame in a door, cut in windows, run electricity…really, you can almost do anything.

Today the DH and I went looking at shipping containers.  I’ve been toying the idea of using one for my ’studio’.  I would  put it in the back forest, have a friend cut in a couple windows and WA LA, instant Fortress of  Solitude.

They cost about $3,000 and depending upon what was shipped in them I could use one.  The first we saw smelled like garlic.  Really, like garlic.  Next we talked to a local discarded equipment perveyor (junk man) and he said he would charge us $200 – $300 to move one if we found one we wanted.  Low and behold, Land O Goshen…there were TWO in the paper today for sale.  They only wanted $1000 for each.  This sounded too good to be true.

Well Yup r doodle, it was too good to be true.  They were previously used for growing pot, Mary Jane…you know that illegal stuff.  Now I will admit I have smoked a few in my day and tried really hard to inhale.  Although I would not be the first in line if it was legalized, I but would at lease be standing around the corner.  But I could not use a pot reeking shipping container to dye yarn and run my business nor could I use a garlic smelling container.  On the flip side I may come up with some really interesting color combinations if I used the pot smeller for dying….Hmmmm.

After talking to the junk guy I learned the ‘problem’ with using the shipping container for an office is the sweat.  Yes, they sweat when it gets cold.  You have to basically build around the outside and frame in the inside so I’ve thrown out that idea and will stick in my garage room.

Oh well, it was a good idea anyway.

Medical Monday

Posted in Redwood Living at 7:30 am by Lynette

Today is Medical Monday for me.  I have spent the past 12 hours ‘prepping’ for a procedure at noon today.  What a pain this process is.  The last time I did this I don’t remember it being this difficult.  Of course, I also reacted so severely to the medication I lost 4 days memory; two days before, the day of and one day after.  Weird!

The things I do to myself to keep the body going.  It seems my life these days is a series of preventative measures.  Meds to keep the lungs open, meds to keep the arthritis from freezing my neck and shoulders, meds to keep the acid reflux at bay.  Meds, meds meds.  A couple years ago I tried to wean myself from a few of them.  I was concerned that by taking so many pills and inhaled medications (9 in all) I was basically perpetuating my symptoms.  I hoped that my body would right itself if I just took decreasing doses of the meds.  Wrong!  All I did was endure weeks of increased symptoms and have to play catch up to get all systems working again.  That freaked me out.  Would I be dead now if these meds weren’t available?  I thought of my Dad who died at 48 from a lung condition.

Getting older sucks.  But getting older with medical issues is a pain.  There are days I find myself worrying about the future.  What will happen when the DH retires and our medical insurance is not as good as it is now?  That day is not too far off…about 3 years.  What would happen if I could not afford the hundreds of dollars in meds I take every month?  But I’ve chosen, most days, to be the ostrich and stick my head in the sand.  I live today for today and just keep plugging along and taking those pills.

Days like today when my body is very hungry and reacting to the cleansing dosages I’ve had to take this past 12 hours make me grumpy.  Too bad for the husband who is off this week and has to take me to and from the hospital for the procedure.  I am not a nice hungry person.  Last time we found I come out of anesthesia in a snit.  When the Dr. came in to ask how I was doing I said “I’m doing fine but this Jerk (the DH) is pissing me off!”  I asked the husband what he was doing and he said nothing, just sitting there.  Who knows what will come out of my mouth today.  But my mood will greatly improve when I get to eat something around 2 this afternoon.

I know tomorrow will be better and my hope is that they will find nothing so I can go on the 10 year plan instead of the 5 year plan.  Ten years, what will life be like in 10 years?  DH will be retired, kids will be through high school and hopefully in college.  The oldest will be 34 (akkk!).  I will be 62.  My Mother will be 95 and the step father probably will have passed as he would be 100.  Will we still be living here?  Probably not, hopefully we’ve sold our house and moved up to Brookings if the oceans have not risen due to melting polar ice.  Will I still be knitting socks, I hope so.  Ten years seems like a long time but 10 years ago I was 42 and 7 months pregnant with my youngest.  Wow….time goes by fast.

So you see how I get when I cannot eat for 15 hours and have to cleanse my body, reflective and melancholy.  It isn’t a pretty picture….tomorrow will be better.

Too much to do

Posted in Redwood Living at 11:23 am by Lynette

After the flurry of activity this past weekend with apple pies and smoking salmon I have to confess I’ve neglected the blog o sphere.  In defense of myself, I’ve been very busy gearing up for the Holiday rush and vending opportunities. I set a goal for myself to knit 5 pair of socks per day.  In addition I’ve seen shipping out loads of Soak Wash and receiving orders for customers to knit socks from their yarn.  Plus I’m trying to get organized to become more efficient in the business and I’ve employed a part time employee to help with the yarn winding. But this morning was spent at DJ’s Jr. High School to help with the Medieval Fair.  I helped two girls, one with weaving on the Ashford Knitter’s Loom 20071018_0050_1 and another using Hand Carders from Ashford.  In addition I took my drop spindles and the Ashford Traveler wheel along to help demo.  It went well, and I had loads of fun but small events like this take away hours from my production schedule.  As of today I’m 7 pairs of socks behind.  Let’s not even talk about the fact I want to dye 4 new dye lots to offer for sale in my ETSY and Internet Store.

I’m a busy gal but here you go.  Some images from this morning’s Medieval Fair.

A Beautiful Day in MY neighborhood?

Posted in Redwood Living at 8:40 am by Lynette

A wonderful day in MY neigoborhood?

Sunny today which is normal after an air cleaning, river flushing rain.  Mild, no wind and no clouds.  A great day to work outside and get the yard ready for the winter storms.

But NOOOOOoooooo, my ass*&% neighbor has been burning for the past 4 days.  Today is the worst.  This beautiful crisp, clear morning is polluted by him burning redwood tree needles/leaves and his dog shit.  Yes, I said dog shit.  Oh yah, to get the fires started he uses diesel and household garbage/plastic.  This nice mixture of toxic smoke has settled over my house (because there is no wind) and forced me to stay inside.  I choose not to enjoy they day and then pay the price of severe asthma and lung congestion.

What I don’t think he understands is WE LIVE IN THE REDWOOD NATIONAL FOREST jerk, we’re suppose to have those redwood thingies on the ground.  It is called forest floor.

Some people have SFB (shit for brains).

Eye Candy Friday

The mystery squash.  It is a volunteer, came up by itself in August.  Is growing like gangbusters but I have no idea what it is.  It is currently about 16 inches long….could it be a loufa or is it a spaghetti squash?  I’ve not grown either but you never know.  I did toss a lot of old seeds last year.  It has grown out of the mulch bin.  Who knows….do you?
