The Cat is out of the Bag

Posted in Redwood Living at 6:42 pm by Lynette

Yes, the word is out.  There will be a baby due in mid May next year.  No not me silly…. I’m 52…. my oldest daughter.  We’ve known for about a month but have waited to say anything until they decided she had to tell her principal because of Dr. appointments and such.  She is doing OK.  A bit of nausea and tired but basically fine.  Next Tuesday they will get the best estimate of a due date at their first real Dr. appointment.

I guess I need to start thinking baby socks, blankets, sweaters hats and such.  This is really no problem for me because whenever I want to try a new pattern I knit up a mini version.  I already have quite a supply of partially finished blankets and infant clothing.

My meeting with the Small Business Association went well.  I came away with loads of information and alot to discuss with the DH.  Now I have to decide just how much bigger I want to grow my business.

A new venue for me this year.  The SunRiver Heritage Christmas Festival.  A couple new friends I met at Shaniko have invited me to share their booth the Saturday after Thanksgiving.  The bonus is I reserved the weekend at our timeshare The Pines.  So the whole family will be able to go and maybe if we’re lucky, the kids will be able to go up to Mt. Batchelor to enjoy the snow.

Off to do homework or rather to help the son with his homework.

Lambs, rain and packages….Oh My!

Posted in Girl Scouts, Knitting, Redwood Living at 9:36 am by Lynette

They’re off.  I just got back from the post office and mailed the first installment of the Rainy Day Yarn ClubWork has started on November’s yarn and goodies.  There will be yarn, stitch markers and a special ‘gift’ along with the usual sale flyer and soak wash.  Let me know when you’ve received your yarn.  I can hardly wait to post the finished projects.

Tomorrow morning I have a meeting with our local Small Business Administration to see about organizing my business better.  Hopefully I’ll come away with some good suggestions and leads.  I know I want to grow Fernwood Woolworks and I have owned a small business before but it is always good to discuss business plans and hear about funding opportunities.

If you’ve ever lived in an area where the wheather can change as frequently as ours does, you know that you just go ahead with whatever plans you had no matter what.  So when 20 of us set out yesterday to visit Riyescott Ranch and see the lambs and learn about wool, fleece and roving it didn’t matter that it was a driving rain storm.  It also didn’t matter that there was a river running down the steep road.  Or that we all got damp and fogged up our car windows.  It also didn’t matter that we had sheep ‘doo’ on the bottom of our shoes along with them being muddy and wet.  Our Junior Girl Scout troop (and the brownies, parents and siblings) trekked up the road and saw this…

They got to do this….

And learned about that….20071009_0037_1_1

We ended the day with a drive through Dutch Brothers for Not So Hot Chocolates for the kids.

So far I’ve heard only rave reviews.  Thanks so much to Linda and her sheep, dogs, lambs and husband for letting us visit.  We can hardly wait to go back in the spring to have a picnic and hike around the property.

Red Sky in morning…

Posted in Knitting, Redwood Living at 9:07 am by Lynette

You all know that old saying….Red sky at night, sailor take delight, Red sky in morning, sailor take warning.

Well, here it comes.  The first big rain of the season.IMG_1197_1

This is sunrise in the Eastern Sky.  Believe you me, the western sky did not look this good.

We have 3 basic types of rain here in the real Northern California.

#1  Mist - Missed Oregon hit California

#2  Soaker - A combination of mist and rain that goes on and on and on and on….you get the idea.  This one is the rain that usually finds the leaks in your roof.

#3  Del Norter - Wind, rain, electrical outages (by the way, the scanner just came over and said CLETS is down and the Humboldt coast guard land lines are down.  That cannot be a good sign.)

I don’t think this will be a Del Norter but I have my flashlights, batteries, radio, extra water (we’re on a well) propane casisters, Mr. Buddy heater, sleeping bags and rain barrels in place.  When the electricity goes down we have no well pump and no septic pump.  This could be interesting!

IMG_1209_1 The fish are very happy in their freshly cleaned pond.  They don’t care about rain they’re wet already!

How appropriate that the first installment of this year Rainy Day Yarn Club would be mailed out on a stormy day.  I’ll post the contents of the club packet on Monday when all the club members should have received theirs.  Sign ups start for the Spring/Summer Club on March 1st.  I know that is a long time away but I’ve had some ask already.

Monday, Monday

Things to do places to go - Post office to ship out a couple packages, the Gym to get some exercise, the store to buy some salad fixins to go with the BBQ tri tip for dinner.

What to do with the apples? - I’ve dried and made apple sauce.  I’m thinking apple pies.  I have this great recipe where you make the crust and fill with apples and other filling ingredients then partially bake and freeze.  Almost instant apple pie during the winter.

Clean up garden - Time to get rid of all those bent over sunflowers and pumpkin plants.  The DH has a week off in October and he will be in charge of ‘dressing’ the beds for winter.  One of our local lumber mills has this great product called Dirty Finds.  It is a mixture of soil washed off the trees before milling, composted crab shells and yard clippings.  It sits in a big pile for 6 weeks and is beautiful, fresh soil for the garden.

Cut back yard - after the pond self draining and spending a day cleaning it out I see the yard needs to be cut back for winter.

Package dye club - The yarn is dyed, I’ve received the stitch markers from Hide and Sheep, now all I have to do is package.

Laundry - The never ending evil.
