Captain, there be a whale there!
Unfortunately we had a whale wash up on South Beach Friday morning.
I took the kids and drove down to see. We didn’t plan on getting out of the car but we did. Seeing a bunch of folks walking toward the beach - it just seemed like the thing to do. This was a once in a lifetime teachable moment. To see a sperm whale (though dead) only 10 feet away was amazing. The smell was something I would rather forget. In fact my tummy has not been the same for the past 12 hours. The kids now know the definition of ‘down wind’. And the reason Mom said, better wear a coat.
As in most things, the powers that be are fighting over who’s responsibility it is. Just bury the thing. Get a good ole boy to bring his tractor and dig a hole. I can’t believe it. The city says it doesn’t fall under their umbrella, it is the Harbor. The Harbor says it is not their responsibility, it is the County. The County says it isn’t their problem, it is the National Park. The National Park says not on our watch, it is the City. JUST DIG A HOLE GUYS!
