A River Runs Though It

Posted in Redwood Living at 11:40 am by Lynette

This December will be remembered as the month we got 9 inches of rain in 48 hours.

We have an unbelievable amount of water flowing out of the french drain (Thank you Walt and Bill Russell for insisting we put one in!)

20081230_0159 Early in the Fall I decided to cut up some pond liner I had and create a creek bed.  The plan was to secure (take) some river rock from local rivers and make a permanent river bed.  Without this foresight all the water would have ended up in our leach field and we would really have been up the creek without a flush!

Speaking of Up the Creek…

We have a full creek which is a good thing because the cistern located in the creek is our water source.20081230_0162

And finally the bank slid.  What were the odds of both the DH and I would be looking out different  windows as it slid.  It was like slow motion and I wished I had a video camera to record it.  We ended up with about 8 inches of liquid mud that landed on our driveway.  Thanks to our friends and neighbors for loaning us their tractor.  It made quick work of moving the majority of the muck over the ledge.  Unfortunately the muck ran right smack dab into my greenhouse.  I may have to rethink the location of many garden beds.  I even got the kids out of bed to help with the fun.

Today the sun is shining and we’re spending time outside to survey the damage.  The Dh just called to say he is on his way home to go Elk Hunting.  We have 2 days left to secure our elk from a land owner tag.  Let’s hope he is successful.

Enjoy your day!

Let it Freeze!

Posted in Redwood Living at 9:37 am by Lynette

Sure it’s pretty but when it snows and melts then freezes again it is treacherous.  I haven’t figured out how to get down the hill to let the chicken’s out yet.  I may have to wait for the sun to melt some of the ice.

The cats are so confused.

Frost on the Pumpkin?  Uh, that’s more than frost. And the Blue Jays gave up on breaking through the ice to get the frozen bird seed.

So much for fire wood.

You may think, what is she complaining about?  I’m really not complaining because this is not normal weather for us.  The rains will come, then I’ll complain.

Snow, on the Beach?

Posted in Redwood Living at 7:34 am by Lynette

Snow?  At the Ocean?

Yup, it snowed yesterday here on the Pacific Coast.  In fact we got about 2 inches until it started to melt.  Nowall the roads are a frozen sheet of ice.  School is delayed for 2 hours and the kids are sleeping snug in their beds.

let it snow

I’ve been so busy with socks I didn’t realize I hadn’t posted since November 25th.  I’m in the final blitz/push for Christmas socks and have only 24 pair to make by Thursday.  This is very do-able as long as I don’t get distracted by….snow?

My head update.  Not that you really care about my ‘physical’ being but if you’ve been a reader of my blog for a while you will see a trend toward sinus infections.  I visited a new Ear Nose Throat Dr. last Thursday and the verdict is….I FAILED MANAGED CARE.  I asked him if this was something I did.  He said no, you need surgery.  So yesterday I braved the snow and ice and drove up to Gold Beach for a CT scan.  It was very revealing.  The good news is I don’t have anything growing in my head (read cancer), there is not a bean stuck up there or a hot wheels tire, or a piece of masking tape (yes I have personal experience with either family members or friends with the above!).  The bad news is where there should be black open air spaces I have fluid and scar tissue.  Well duh, I’ve have so many sinus infections in the past 3 years my body has no germs at all from all the meds..  So surgery it is.  Hoping to schedule the beginning February so I can get the kids through the next play.

Play update:  KT my drama/diva has landed a plumb part in the next Harbor Performing Arts Center play.  Practices start tonight as long as I can get out of the driveway that is!

So if you live anywhere East of here (read Pam and Mike) be ready for a blast from the west.  Cold and frigid weather.
