Not exactly eye candy Friday

Posted in Redwood Living at 8:35 am by Lynette

I had my sinus surgery on Wednesday.  This isn’t what I would call eye candy Friday but…here is the latest in post sinus surgery garb.  The nose diaper

I thank you all for your good thoughts.  I’m doing fine and once again can say, pain pills are a good thing.

Enjoy your weekend!

Only Edibles

Posted in Redwood Living at 10:55 am by Lynette

So we’ve moved to virgin land that has only been forest since the beginning of time.

I decided to landscape with only edibles.  Things I can eat.  This is more difficult than you may think but I’ve discovered an interesting sub culture.  There are people out there who only graze through nature.  Acutally they are called foragers.  Here is one from the UK.  He teaches courses.

Here is the guy from the US who is the expert.  He’s a bit freaky looking.

Wildman Devours Japanese Knotweed

I ordered a deck of Wild Cards for all ages.  Edible wild foods.  You can buy them on his web page.  I never new you could eat dock weed.  Hmmm.  I’m a sucker for anything nature related and informative.  It must be the past home school mom in me.

Today to got some Palm Date seeds in the mail.  Yes, they will grow here.  They are currently soaking in a warm bath for 24 hours.  Then, according to the directions on the packet, I have to plant in a sandy loam that is a bit wet.  They have to live in a bright space so I guess that means hooking up the plant lights.

Won’t the neighbors think I’m out of my mind when I have date palms growing down the road?  Of course, it will likely take 10 years to actually get any height.  Who knows if we’ll still be here.  Who knows how to harvest them.  Who knows how long it takes to acually get dates.  And the most important question…do deer eat them.

Onward I go in search of ’stuff to eat and grow’.  If you come accross anything, let me know.

Oh, by the way, I came up with a great name for a business today.  As I was driving the kids to school there was a bunch of crows feasting on a carcus.  How about ‘Crow Recycling’ for a business that, well, recycles?  They could have crows on their sign.  No carcus’ though.

Sail on Silvergirl

Posted in Redwood Living at 9:49 am by Lynette

I first heard these lyrics when I was 17.  At that time I was the standard ‘troubled’ teen age girl.  Unsure of my future, trapped living in an adult mobile home park with my parents where the next youngest person was 42 years old.  Riding the bus to and from school for over an hour a day.  Basically no contact with my own kind except school.  I could not participate in school activities, I was geeky, I had no boyfriend because I was less than attractive.  You get the image.

This morning when the kids and I were driving to school this song came on the radio.  I’ve been looking for a song that fits into my voice range and this one is the ticket.  I have to sing the song A cappella to try out for our local performing arts group.  You see, I’m trying out for an adult part in Grease.  This will be the first time I’ve done anything like this and, needless to say, I’m a bit freaked out about it.

Anyway with all the ‘unrest’ and economic woes, this song is relavant.  Perhaps you remember it too.

When you’re weary, feeling small,
When tears are in your eyes, I will dry them all;
I’m on your side. when times get rough
And friends just cant be found,
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down.
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down.

When you’re down and out,
When you’re on the street,
When evening falls so hard
I will comfort you.
Ill take your part.
When darkness comes
And pains is all around,
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down.
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down.

Sail on silvergirl,
Sail on by.
Your time has come to shine.
All your dreams are on their way.
See how they shine.
If you need a friend
I’m sailing right behind.
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind.
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind.
